In recent history we have become addicted to the cleanliness and convenience of gas and oil-based cooking. But with the rising cost of fossil fuels, and their carbon impact on the environment, many people are going back to cooking with solid fuel again.

On your list of decisions you anticipate making in the creation of your next kitchen, selecting an extractor fan might have been forgotten. Although this piece of equipment is very important in both aesthetic and practical terms, it is an often neglected one as well.
I can’t tell you the number of times I have heard a kitchen designer say ‘the client had strong opinions on all the finishes and appliances, but left the choice of extractor fan completely up to me…they didn’t really think about it.’ Fair enough, but if, like most kitchen aficionados, you feel the cooker is the focus of your kitchen, then you ought to seriously consider the thing that will be at eye level above that focal point.

I remember the first time I ever used a gas cooktop. After years of laboured effort over an electric cook top, the fact that you could get what felt like instant-boil heat made the world seem like a much better place. I, for one, was hooked.
Cooking fuel options are often forgotten about as you get so used to the type of cooker you are using or have always used but there are benefits to be had if you think carefully about your choice - whether you go for an electric, gas or other style of cooker.
